BASIC-RTI: An Implementation Manual

The Behavioral and Academic Success through Intervention Choices (BASIC) RTI Implementation Manual is a guidebook for administrators as they develop an RTI model and plan for its implementation. The goal in creating this manual is to give school administrators the tools they need to move from a conceptual understanding of RTI to practical implementation. We deliberately use language that is as jargon-free as possible, but in recognition of the need for everyone to speak the same language, we include an "Essential Jargon" section at the beginning of each chapter, where we define all the key vocabulary you will need to feel confident in discussing the RTI concepts presented.

Finally, we are school psychologists, not experts in curriculum and instruction. In our RTI trainings we focus administrators' attention on their role as agents of change and the reactions they will likely face "back home" from staff. Our specialization is in making effective changes through planning, effective communication, high expectations, and provision of adequate support to staff.

As the name of this manual reflects, our conceptualization of RTI places heavy emphasis on choices. Data-based decisions are choices about when, where, and how to intervene. Many interventions are currently available to you and many more will soon become available. You will review the research support for these interventions and choose which are most effective and which are most appropriate for your campus(es). You will have to choose personnel to fill new roles created by the RTI model. Each of these important choices will directly affect the outcome of RTI for your students.
